The James W van Putten Floating Trophy for the Seedling Grower of the Year went to Robert Bergh from Zeekoevlei.
The trophies were handed to the winners at the Rooibos Ltd Farmers' Day held at David Burger's farm Diepkloof on Tuesday, 20 October 2015. The full-day event included presentations by Mr Rupert Koopman (Cape Nature) on biodiversity and Rooibos production, Prof Nick Vink (Stellenbosch University) on politics and agriculture, and Mr David Burger on the Rooibos producer of the year.
Nominees for the Producer of the Year were judged on their production planning and administration, production efficiency, the overall condition of their plantations, and their contribution to enhanced production technology.
Says Rooibos Ltd MD Martin Bergh: "The production of Rooibos depends on cost-efficient production practices and the effective use of natural resources. This all starts with the Rooibos producer. Today's producers need to be innovative and agile, and manage costs, quality, people and the environment in order to deliver a sustainable supply of Rooibos. David Burger sets an example to producers in the Rooibos industry."
A special program for the ladies on the day included a talk by Therese Louw on body stress relief, a demonstration on creativity in the house by Terena le Roux and Dala Watts (IDEAS magazine) and a decoupage workshop presented by Ilse Saaiman.
