The Sri Lankan tea industry is celebrating the 150 years of Ceylon tea this year. The Tea Exporters Association (TEA) in Sri Lanka used its Annual General Meeting to celebrate this milestone and invited Rooibos Ltd’s Sales Manager in Sri Lanka, Tharanga Cooray, to attend the prestigious event. The AGM, which included a formal dinner, was attended by some 400 guests, among them diplomats, Members of Parliament, senior government officials and private sector trade members. The event took place at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo on 20 October 2017.
Dr Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka, graced the occasion as the chief guest while Mr Sanje Widyaratne, Chairman of the Walters Bay tea growers, USA, was the keynote speaker.
Rooibos Ltd was a sponsor of TEA AGM. Rooibos Ltd’s logo was displayed and a Rooibos video clip was shown during the event, strengthening the company’s brand. Rooibos Ltd’s brochures were also displayed.
The Tea Exporters Association, which was formed in 1999, has now become the voice of the tea exporters. TEA is recognised by the highest government policy-making bodies. The Chairman of TEA holds a seat on the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Tea Board and also represents TEA at various government ministries, other statutory organisations and business chambers. TEA members are currently responsible for about 85% of Sri Lanka’s tea exports in volume and value.
